Diego Garcia Runway Maintenance Gets Postponed to April at UK-US Base

(MENAFN) Planned repairs on runway 13/31 at the joint UK-US military base on Diego Garcia have been postponed until April 2, according to a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued Monday. The closure, originally scheduled for February, is expected to last about 80 working days.

“Runway 13/31 will be closed Monday through Friday from 0700-1700 local (0100-1100 GMT) for repairs, beginning 02 April 2026, for approximately 80 working days,” the NOTAM stated.

Diego Garcia is the largest island of the Chagos Archipelago, a group of seven atolls with more than 60 islands in the central Indian Ocean. It has functioned as a joint UK-US military base since the 1970s.

Amid rising tensions with Iran, reports suggested that the US had considered using the base for potential strikes, although the UK government denied permission.

In May 2025, the UK and Mauritius signed a sovereignty transfer agreement, ending over two centuries of British rule over the archipelago. The deal allows the US and UK to continue operating the strategically important base for the next 99 years, though it has not yet entered into force pending domestic ratification.

Mauritius and the US are scheduled to hold talks in Port Louis from Feb. 23-25 to discuss security cooperation and arrangements for the Diego Garcia base, amid disagreements between Washington and London over its future use.
